The Institute of Industrial Research (IIR) is one of the leading 13 Research Institutes of Ghana’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the main Science and Technology Research and Development Institution of Ghana. The CSIR-IIR is Ghana’s foremost industrial research and development organization.

CSIR-IIR Laboratory Facilities

Biomass Laboratory

The CSIR-IIR biogas research equipment is made up of circulating water bath with temperature control facility, 5litre Continuous Stir Tank Reactor (CSTR) which is the bioreactor. The set up comes with ultra-flow meter which can measure the flow rate of the gas as well as the cumulative gas volume which is linked to a data centre controlled by a computer system to give you real time measurement of gas volume with graphical presentation.

The facility is used to study biogas production and conduct co-digestion study to improve biogas production. It facilitates research processes such as biogas production, optimization by varying critical parameters like temperature and feedstock ratio retention time. Apart from biogas research, the bioreactor is also used for practical research in the area of waste treatment.

Biofuel Research
The Laboratory has a state of the art bomb calorimeter which is used to study calorific and heating value of biofuels (charcoals and other materials).

Bioprocessing of Agricultural Residues for Value Addition

  • Bioethanol research
  • Amino acid fermentation (lactic acid and lysine)
  • Solid state fermentation for protein
